Revamped website for Sandra Smets

I recently made some small adjustments to a web design I made years ago (2006), before the exploding social media era and before I started exploring WordPress. It’s the personal website of journalist and art critic Sandra Smets, who mainly writes for NRC Handelsblad.

In my humble opinion this design has survived the test of time just fine. It was nice to hear that Sandra thought so too, and was still very happy with it. The site just needed some tweaking to make sharing easier. Also Google changed it’s code for personalized search over the years, and this happened to break the search functionality all together. All is up and running again. The contents make for some  interesting reading too, so go check it out already.

Sandra also asked me to design some stationary for her. Working on that now.

June 25: EXTRA EDITION ass-crack stage-hack

Opportunity knocked, so esc.rec. organizes/improvises this extra(!) ass-crack stage-hack in June. Yan Jun just so happens to be in The Netherlands (forPoetry International). Besides poetry he also makes music and – together with Roel Meelkop and BMB con. – he comes to Havenkwartier Deventer to perform for us on Saturday, June 25.

This experimental evening will be introduced by John Heymans, a specialist in early electronic music. His introduction could provide a useful reference or context when listening to these artists and experimental electronic music in general.

High speed poster design by me.

June 3: Ass-crack stage-hack #13 + The Diamond Exchange

After another thrilling episode of ass-crack stage-hack and a kick-ass first edition of The Diamond Exchange last month (just ask anyone who was there), the next special date is in sight. On June 3 Stranded Horse plays for us at ass-crack stage-hack #13 in Havenkwartier Deventer.

But that is not all. You can also enjoy a promising second edition of The Diamond Exchange with Jan Willem Broek and Fokko Jan Dijksterhuis. This is going to be an interesting meet-up. Really. Take my word for it.

And for all of you who were starting to miss the excellent food by Goestingjockey Jean Klare, you’re in luck. He ‘s back. But there are very few seats left as I write this, so be quick if you want to spoil your tastebuds silly. Make your reservation by mailing harco@escrec.com.

Oh, and I designed the poster again.

Landtonen benches

This morning I finally completed a project I have been working and waiting on for a long time (due to many unforeseen circumstances). About a year ago, I was asked by Kunstenlab to design and produce four benches for the Landtonen project in Okkenbroek. Practically the only requirements in this assignment were that these benches should blend in with the rural surroundings and incorporate a few lines of selected text in the design. The budget was extremely tight.

I decided to go with tree trunks (how can you go wrong with lumber?) and contacted IJsellandschap to provide me with a local harvest of trees. It took some time but eventually I had four weighty pieces of wood I could work with (thank you Gerben). I removed the bark, chisseled square holes in the logs and fitted them with four classic coffee table legs each. I planed the seating area and surface milled the provided texts (by hand).

Oh well, you can see the results in the pictures below.

Special thanks go out to Josien in ‘t Hof (at Kunstenlab) and Ap Haverslag (for initiating the Landtonen project, helping me with the positioning of the benches and providing me with all sorts of insights in the local community of Okkenbroek).
