Opening my studio for the public is always a good excuse to tidy up I guess… Other artists opening their studio in Havenkwartier this year: Aukje Grouwstra (Baufrau), Femke Teussink, Elise van de Linden, Margot Olde Loohuis and Babet Olde Weghuis. Well worth it!

Open: Saturday June 19 – Sunday June 20, 12:00 – 17:00 hrs. All participating artists are mentioned in a free magazine, including their studio adresses and a map (see pictures below).

From May 29 until June 27, 82 Deventer artists (including me) present themselves at the Salon in the Bergkerk, Deventer. In the weekend of 19/20 June, 62 of these artists (including me) also open their studio for the public in the Atelierroute. Both Salon and Atelierroute are a part of Toegang Vrij, organised by Kunstenlab once every two years.

I made some brand new works for the exhibition in the Bergkerk. I’ll probably post them here soon, although I’m not sure if I can get the essence of this work across through the internet… I’ll try to get some decent photo documentation.

Saturday the 22nd is the first day and it features a lecture on independent art & music by Wouter Jaspers, live performances by Transfolmer, Staplerfahrer, Jacq Palinckx, Pierre Bastien and label presentations by the good folks of Lomechanik, Korm Plastics, Vatican Analog, Tonefloat and esc.rec. of course… A good line-up with a lot of familiar faces for all you esc.rec. connaisseurs.

Some more esc.rec. artists perform the next day in an electronic jamsession: Frans de Waard and Roel Meelkop.

Greg Haines returns to the ass-crack stage-hack (see his previous show) to present his new album; minimal, modern classical compositions, oozing melancholy at times. Subtle use of electronics allows him to build his compositions carefully, layer by layer. For this concert he brings an extra cello/violin player.

Marcus Fjellström fuses contemporary classical music with experimental electronica and audiovisual works. His output ranges from orchestral compositions, through independent record label releases to collaborations with “Salad Fingers” creator David Firth. Lately he has teamed up with Dutch graphic designer and artist Bas Mantel for exciting audiovisual experiments, in both moving images and print… he also designed the poster for this ass-crack stage-hack.

Ethisch Reveil is a relatively new initiative in Havenkwartier Deventer. They host a monthly night of underground bands and artists. On Tuesday April 27, we get Tiny Concept (FR) and Rape Ape (US). Cette Truc (c’est moi) will be in charge of filling in the gaps with audio chunks. Should be fun! More info here.

Some time ago I went to R10 to check out the place, since I had never been there. It has plenty of facilities and workspace. I aim to use this workperiod mainly for research, since R10 oozes ‘laboratory’ out of every pore. Kind of reminds me of my art academy time. Sandrijn seems to be an interesting and challenging partner in this project. I don’t know him well, but am very familiar with his work, which I selected last year when curating the Ontbos exhibition in CBK Apeldoorn.

At this point I still have no idea what we are going to do next week, but I’m very anxious to find out where this collaboration leads me!

Some time ago I had decided not to go to this smashing New Year’s party in Havenkwartier. Instead I was really looking forward to be with my wife and two kids this year. But then it hit me. Since I live literally around the corner, I can do both. After celebrating the new year at home, there’s still plenty of party left to go to.

So I’m going to take a peek anyway. I’ll just be there a bit later.

Yesterday, when the partyhosts of Ticket to the Tropics got wind of this, they put in a last-minute request for one of my tropical dj-sets. I couldn’t resist this tempting offer and am whipping one up right now. Think Copacabana, Calypso, Speed Merengue, Tropicalectronica, Cumbia and Good Vibrations…
