J’ee-haw! exhibition at WILLIE in the IJsselhotel, Deventer: Vrienden van J’ee-haw! Galerie Prints, J’ee-haw! Compact Disc (with Cowboy Bodybuilder Billboard and J’ee-haw! Audioburst), J’ee-haw! Remixed (with listening cabines), ZZZZ-monument.

The exhibition is open every Sunday, 13.00-17.00 hrs. We host five Sunday Matinees during the exhibition, with live performances by the following J’ee-haw! Remixers: Sasker Scheerder, Dion, Harco, Edwin van der Heide and Dr. Auratheft.

Sasker Scheerder @ J’ee-haw! Sunday Matinee October 17:

Passwort FM – a Secret Service: A valuable service to computerusers, allowing them to submit their most important passwords to an online database where, whithout human intervention, the passwords are translated text-into-speech and broadcasted in an hourly cycle onto a idiosyncratic radiostation. The user can localize the station and listen back his now forgotten password that was programmed to be read out at the user’s time of choice, in minutes/ seconds after the hour. For security reasons the location of the radiostation will vary regularly. Photo: Secret Console at IJsselhotel.

Dion @ J’ee-haw! Sunday Matinee October 24:

Hiphop extravaganza with Beatmaker/DJ Dion on the wheels of steel (with open mic!). Dion also creates beats for Dutch rappers Jawat! and Duvel.

Harco @ J’ee-haw! Sunday Matinee October 31:

A long, freaky, but occasionally authentic country-set, injected with experimental electronics, supported by ever faithful companion MC Hobbe.

Edwin van der Heide @ J’ee-haw! Sunday Matinee November 7:

Live performance by Edwin van der Heide, preceded by the dj-debut of Jeannette. Edwin van der Heide is working as autonomous artist in the field of sound, space and interaction. His original background is in electronic music. His current work is hard to define in the traditional terms of music, sound art or media art because he is permanently working on the edge and the characteristics of the used medium. In this sense the medium does not just mediate but is being explored, redefined, and finally composed with a musical approach involving a new communicating language. The fact that qualities of musical language are being used in development of the work does not mean that the presentation form of the work is related to the concert form known in music. The result can either be an installation, a performance or an environment.

Dr. Auratheft @ J’ee-haw! Sunday Matinee November 14:

URBI & ORBI, a sonic review. Here’s a bonus review of Dr. Auratheft’s sonic review by Rufus.K.

Klapstoelen en Knipmessen

‘Klapstoelen en knipmessen’ (Folding Chairs and Pocket Knives) is an exhibition in Het Nationaal Vlechtmuseum in Noordwolde. A broad variety of folding chairs, seats, stools, snap objects and sitting tools for on the road are shown in this exhibition. The total selection is completed with a collection of pocket knives and scissors. I showed ‘Klapraspkruk’.

The museum also published a booklet on the subject, titled ‘Klapstoelen en knipmessen’ and there was a large article about the exhibition in the art section of De Volkskrant, including pictures of ‘Klapraspkruk’.

IJsselhotel, The Alternative

An exhibition organized by artists’ initiative WILLIE in the IJsselhotel, Deventer. At the time of this exhibition the IJsselhotel is still in temporary use by WILLIE, and functions as an art space and venue. But there are plans to make the IJsselhotel a real hotel again, which is probably a good thing, because it’s a deteriorating monumental building in a high class location.

WILLIE collected alternatives for the published definitive plans for reconstruction of the IJsselhotel by means of this exhibition, because they felt the commisioned Deventer architect Paul Dirks had done a really poor job. Clumsy design with a lot of lame excuses (the architect probably calls them arguments) and total disrespect for the nature of the location and the original building.

Agreeing with WILLIE’s point of view (together with a lot of other architects, designers and inhabitants of Deventer), I came up with the following alternative sketch designs for reconstruction of the IJsselhotel in Deventer. They are both more or less ‘subtle’ parodies on the design and arguments of the architect in question.

ijsselhotel1.jpg

Nr.2 (right side view): The IJsselhotel is restored as it at present day exists. Then the IJsselhotel is mirrored and reproduced next to the existing building. This mirrored reproduction has a skin of sandblasted glass. In the places where the original structure of the IJsselhotel opens (windows, doors), the reproduction is not sandblasted, so that the transparent skin of the new construction opens itself in the same areas as the original. The architectural construction of the reproduction is made up out of concrete and steel. Because of a too short work period, details have unfortunately not been developed yet. The plan of the mirrored IJsselhotel will mainly coincide with the plan of the (restored) IJsselhotel.

ijsselhotel2.jpg

Nr.3 (right side view): The IJsselhotel is restored to its 19th century state. Then a penthouse in the shape of a crashed helicopter is introduced in the existing structure. By introducing this contrast the historical character of the IJsselhotel stays intact. The penthouse has undergone a slight enlargement in respect to the helicopter after which the penthouse was modelled, to create a better functioning space. The total amount of space which is won with this design is minimal and as a result the building may no longer be profitable as a hotel in this design. However, the attraction value of this design compensates largely for this lack of functionality. The building could possibly get another function.
