New esc.rec. release

It has been sitting on a shelf for quite some time, but here it finally is!

The 14th esc.rec. release is ‘ssri’, Robert Witt‘s debut album. His delicate, delay driven, repetitive dubscapes are to drown in. Combined with heavily manipulated but subtle sounds, listening to this album with eyes closed can become a very visual experience. Something like submerging yourself in a relaxing warm bath, dreaming, unwilling to surface again into cold harsh reality.

Graphic design by me.

Ssri is available on cd-r for only 8 euro (as usual). You can listen to the first track overhere.

Radio 1

Thanks to EMI‘s decision to stop using copyright protection on their cd’s, I was interviewed (as co-founder of esc.rec.) for an item about making money with music, which was broadcasted on Radio 1.

I think it’s a pretty funny idea to ask esc.rec. for this interview, since we’re currently not making any money out of our record label, we’re only just breaking even. I guess it must have something to do with moneymaking not being the main purpose of having a record label for us… However, we do manage to pay our artists some!

It gets even funnier as I found out that the other people who were interviewed for this item were a former director of EMI and saxophone players Hans Dulfer and Candy Dulfer.

Cut-up Radio

The times are troublesome for the music industry, but how are things with the small independent labels in the Netherlands? Joeri Adriaanse of Cut-up Radio interviewed Narrominded, Muze and esc.rec. to find out…

Grannittin

‘Grannittin’ is originally a live performance by Robert Witt, in collaboration with ‘Mevrouw de Vries’, an art project initiated by visual artist Anne Reijse, in which all kinds of every day objects are knitted in real size, mostly by elderly women. The live performance consists out of the live manipulation of sounds emited from contact microphones attached to the knitting needles of the knitting ladies present at the opening of a ‘Mevrouw de Vries’ exhibition.

Esc.rec. has now released ‘Grannittin’, a double cd-r in a unique package, handmade with recycled knitted fabrics. The two discs contain a registration of the Grannittin live performance in art gallery Het Langhuis in Zwolle (NL), plus a broad variety of remixes by different artists, made with the original raw audio samples of knitting needles, as recorded by Robert Witt.

‘Grannittin’ features remixes by: Staplerfahrer, Goem, Xaf, Marius, Robert Witt, Radboud Mens, Gluid, Toxic Chicken, Phako, Transfolmer, Lukas Simonis, Maga, Jos Smolders, slo-fi, Timvankessel, Igor Krutogolov. Many thanks to all the artists who participated in this remix project with their excellent re-knitted contributions!

‘Grannittin’ was first presented during a live performance by Robert Witt at the opening of expo ‘Fröbel’ in Kunstenlab, Deventer.
